Do not please EVERYone!

Most of the professionals spend a better part of their life walking on an eggshell while suppressing a part of their personality by being diplomatic to impress everyone. It is ludicrous to satisfy anybody and everybody. The idea, itself is wrong for the obvious reason that one can never please everybody and if one does, he is responsible for displeasing himself.

The insane activity has taken a mass movement in corporate sector, especially in a field like marketing. While it is important to please somebody, to surrender your views in fear of disapproval is being dishonest to your job. Marketing professionals often are afraid to suggest a strategy or put forth a support to a particular proposal in fear of being rejected.

A beautiful quote by a celebrated comedian, Bill Cosby, duly explains the concept,
“I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.”

The key to a successful strategy of a sale lies in intensive discussions and arguments. Most of the successful strategies have emerged out of intensive brainstorming and disagreements. Had their been a meek surrender to fellow demands, one would never know what it is to have a counter strategy.

Although, its absolutely essential to cater to the demands of the audience that you have set your eyes on, the idea is to not abandon your ideals while doing so.

It is also important to note that when a person does disagree to your concept, he is actually voicing his opinion to your idea. The very fact that you have been successful in taking up a view, which has incited your fellow colleagues to react in a certain way, is triumphant in its way. It also means that though your audience respects your view, they have a better perspective to put.

Lets take an example as simple as that of a gift. While you have various brainstorming sessions on various occasions regarding the gift that could fit the person, you really don’t know if the memento is going to delight him. Yet, you stick to a decision with precision and stand by it. However, at times, it may so happen that the person does not like the gift.

Does this really mean that you stop the idea of giving gifts? Just because an idea is not received does not really mean we leave it, right?

Pleasing everybody in lieu of perquisites is a phenomenon that has set a precedent in the corporate industry. A key to the building of a successful organization is to stand by your views and opinions irrespective of the position and views of the leaders.

Unless this happens, it would be a long time until we find our Bill Gates or Warren Buffet!

  1. True. The line between "pleasing others" and "being pleasant" is blurred beyond comprehension, isn't it?
